About Rugby

Rugby is a contact team sport that originated in England in the first half of the 19th century. One of the two codes of rugby football, it is based on running with the ball in hand.

Basic Rules

• Two teams of 15 players each (in Rugby Union)
• The objective is to score more points than the opposition
• Points can be scored by carrying the ball over the try line, kicking it through the goal posts, or forcing the opposition to ground the ball in their own in-goal area
• The ball can only be passed backwards
• Play is continuous, and possession can change at any time
